Who is God?
I. Matthew 16:13-14 (NKJV)
A. Who do people say that God is?
--1. A great preacher like John the Baptist
--2. A miracle worker like Elias (Elisha/Elijah)
--3. A warning sign like Jeremiah
--4. A prophet, messenger from God
B. Who do people say He is today?
--1. A Mother (woman)
--2. The Universe
--3. Nature
--4. Sum total of Judge and Rewarder to the evil and good
--5. Heaven’s owner
C. Who did those around HIM say he was?
--1. Matthew 16:6 Beware of the influences of those around you.
--2. Matthew 16:14 They responded based off of what they obviously listened to by way of who they hung around.
--3. Lord, Master, Rabbi, Teacher.
--4. Matthew 16:15 Jesus asked all of them the same question.
--5. Matthew 16:16 Peter was the only one to respond.
D. Peter’s revelation answered more than the question,
it answered his calling
--1. Matthew 16:17 Jesus proclaims Peter’s position.
---- a. Simon = to hear intelligently; diligently discern, give ear, perceive
---- b. Bar = son; male offspring
---- c. Jonas = Matthew 16:4, Matthew 12:31 3 days in the belly of death, resurrected: people repented at the preaching of Jonah
E. One thought of Jesus even less than that
--1. Matthew 26:20-25
---- a. All 12 are at the table
---- b. They call Jesus “Lord” = Master, supreme in authority, superior to all
---- c. Matthew 26:25 Judas calls Jesus “Master” = Rabbi, teacher, leader.
---- d. This title was a social reference lower than “Lord.”
