18 Now the birth of Jesus took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and not willing to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” which means, God with us. 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him. (Matt 1)
God with Us

23 “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” which means God with us. (Matt 1)
1) God is with us, for us

14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign, Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel. (Isa 7)
“Immanuel” is God’s promise of deliverance.
2) God is with us, for them

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go then and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matt 28)

“Immanuel” is God’s promise of destiny.
Making Christmas about Christ

35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matt 22)
1) Living an All Life
37 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
(Matt 22)

Undivided commitment, service, and thoughts
Understanding “Immanuel” promotes a desire to fully love God
2) Living a Neighboring Life
39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matt 22)

Everyone is your neighbor
Loving our neighbor is a natural outpouring of our love for God
3) Living a Commissioned Life
18 And Jesus came and said to them “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matt 22)

Fulfilling the Great Commission is a natural by-product of honoring the Greatest Commandments

“Immanuel” is God’s promise of covenant.

17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies 18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” (Gen 22)
Today’s Take away:

IMMANUEL: God with us, wants all of us so He can be God through us to lost humanity.
