Colossians Series: Jesus + Nothing

Today we continue a four week series exploring Paul and Timothy's letter to the church in Colossae. This letter is so packed full that we can't possibly cover everything in four sermons. Jesus + Nothing

In this passage, the Colossians were being told that the "add-ons" to faith were just as important as Jesus Himself.

What similarities can we draw to society today?

A warning

Paul warns the Colossians against being taken by new "philosophies".

Many times we are presented with new ideas and philosophies that are presented as something that will only make our faith stronger. What is the truth that Paul is conveying here?

Hold Fast

Holding fast to Jesus enables us to grow. Not just naturally, but spiritually.

Even though we may be told that there is a need for complexity in our lives, Paul explains that by living life at its simplest, we can live it to its fullest, because Jesus is enough.

No Upgrades Required

New phones, new TVs, new clothes. The world tells us that we constantly need to have the latest and greatest to be content.

Paul shows us that Jesus is now, has always been, and will always be, the latest model. There is no upgrade necessary. EVER.

Would You Like Religion With That?

Religious dogma tries to tell us that faith alone is not enough. But Jesus shows us a different way.

Your sin cannot be dealt with by repetitive religious actions. Only Jesus can do that. What have you been doing to try and deal with your own sin?

Fill Me Up

There are many promises this world gives us to fill us with love, with care, with hope. But you will never be as full as if you are filled with Jesus.

Take some time to read through the above passage together and discuss the following:
1. Do you struggle with feeling “full”? What things do we use to try and fill us up?
2. Are there any “new philosophies” that the world is promoting today?
3. How could these draw us away from God?
4. What can we do to safeguard against this?
5. We have freedom in Christ, but also an obligation to others (1 Corinthians 10:31-33). How do we find a balance between the two?
6. How can we live a life full of Christ, and overflowing with thankfulness?
