Would a loving God really send people to Hell?
We have heard that there are two options after death: Heaven and Hell. We’re ok with believing in heaven - a paradise where everything is perfect. But Hell troubles us - if God loves everyone, why wouldn’t we all end up in heaven?

God is LOVING
God is HOLY
“Sin is cosmic treason. Sin is treason against a perfectly pure Sovereign. It is an act of supreme ingratitude toward the One to whom we owe everything, to the One who has given us life itself. Have you ever considered the deeper implications of the slightest sin, of the most minute peccadillo? What are we saying to our Creator when we disobey Him at the slightest point? We are saying no to the righteousness of God. We are saying, “God, Your law is not good. My judgement is better than Yours. Your authority does not apply to me. I am above and beyond Your jurisdiction. I have the right to do what I want to do, not what You command me to do.”

SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS
There is no easy move into this discussion. The topic of sin, judgement and consequences is heavy and sobering. Hell used to be a very up-front conversation, but now it is either discounted or stepped around.
1. Read Romans 1:18, 21, 28-29 and Revelation 21:1-5
How would you react to this statement after reading these passages: the Bible seems to be making contradictory statements that “God is a God of love and a God of wrath.”
2. Discuss the following statement by C.S. Lewis. What is he saying?
“A man can’t be taken to hell, or sent to hell: you can only get there on your own steam.”
If you are up to it, tackle this quote by Lewis. What is he saying?
“The demand of the loveless and the self-imprisoned that they should be allowed to blackmail the universe: that till they consent to be happy (on their own terms) no one else shall taste joy: that theirs should be the final power; that Hell should be able to veto Heaven.” (Great Divorce, 120).
In what ways are people trying to “blackmail the universe”?
3. Why would Jesus say what he said in Mark 9:43. What does that tell us about Hell?
4. Tim Keller said, “Hell is eternal, but it is not inevitable.” With this statement in mind, read 2 Peter 3:8-13 and discuss what is being said there.
5. The question our world wrestles with is “How could a loving God send people to hell?” Someone has said, “the question we should ask is how could a holy God allow people to get into His heaven?” How does this change the conversation and what would you say?
