Genesis 14: Not My Battle, Not My Fight

Genesis 14: Not My Battle, Not My Fight

Series: Grace In The Battle Sometimes life feels like a battlefield — conflicts, losses, and temptations surround us. In Genesis 14, Abram faces a literal war, yet what happens in the aftermath reveals a deeper spiritual truth: the greatest battles aren’t fought with swords, but in the heart — over who gets the glory. Genesis 14: 14When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.

The World is a Battlefield

No wonder the Bible likens the people of the church as soldiers in a war

1 Timothy 6:2. Fight the good fight of the faith.

2 Corinthians 10:3–5 “For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh…For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal…”

Ephesians 6:2. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Archaeologist Nelson Glueck documents the destruction left by these kings:
“I found that every village in their path had been plundered and left in ruins, and the countryside was laid waste. The population had been wiped out or led away into captivity. For hundreds of years thereafter, the entire area was like an abandoned cemetery, hideously unkempt, with all its monuments shattered and strewn in pieces on the ground.”
God Initiates the Rescue
Lot is a prisoner of War

a. 1st he looked @ Sodom
b. Then he moved toward Sodom
c. Now he’s living in Sodom
Whatever these kings have planned for Abram’s nephew; God had other plans

It’s just like God to send out a search and rescue for Lot, for the sake of Abram.

Just like God, He searches us out for the purpose of bringing us back to Himself
“Abram the Hebrew”

While we too are outsiders, strangers in this world--That’s not an excuse to not be involved in the hurt and suffering around us

Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

3. He is Selfless
Faith Refuses the World’s Rewards

· Faith knows that worldly gain can come at the cost of spiritual compromise.

Application: What the world offers may look appealing, but God’s people find satisfaction in His promises.
Faith Receives God’s Blessing

1. Melchizedek appears — a mysterious priest-king — blessing Abram in the name of God Most High.

a. Psalm 110:4 says the priesthood of the Messiah is a priesthood according to the order of Melchizedek, as opposed to being of the order of Aaron.

b. Hebrews 7:3 describes Melchizedek as without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.

Application: Every victory in life should lead us back to thanksgiving and worship.

The Real Battle—the spiritual battle—was not Abram’s fight at all.
God delivered the enemies into his hands.

And God will do the same for us.

Where God gives vision and communion—He also gives victory!!
