Why People Turn On And Betray Jesus – Mark 14:43-72

The ARREST [14:43-59]

Judas abandoned Jesus because he was selfish and greedy (14:43-45).

The disciples abandoned Jesus because they were having a hard time trusting and believing all that He had taught them…even though all that He had taught was coming true…they feared all the uncertainty surrounding them. (14:46-52).

The religious leaders abandoned Jesus because He threatened their existence, their power and their beliefs. They expected something different from Jesus if He really was the Messiah. (53-59).

The world has abandoned Jesus because he refuses to be created in their own image…We rebel because we want Jesus to accommodate to us…but in reality…freedom comes when we turn and look like Him in our daily lives.

The CONFESSION [14:60-65]

Jesus’ silence intentionally forced the high priest to confess the truth he wanted to refuse (14:60-61).

Jesus was unashamed to claim to be the Messiah of the world and the Son of God (14:61-62).

Jesus endured all the wrongful accusations so that he could take the place for our deserving condemnation (14:63-65).

The DENIAL [14:66-72]

Followers of Christ will always struggle between embracing Jesus and often suffering for it or seeking personal comfort (14:66-67).

You Can’t separate, denying Jesus and disowning His Church The church is His body…(14:68-70).

Even those who live for Jesus every day and make promises to be faithful to God need Him in every way to lead and guide them in His grace. (14:71-72)

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 NLT

If some of the most pathetic figures in this narrative are in heaven right now, what sin could keep you out?

Your chance for heaven isn’t based on the crime you committed, but on the plea you entered.

For all the times that we have abandoned Jesus, he has never once abandoned us.

QUESTION: Have you, do you or are you turning on and ignore Jesus in your daily life?
