Genesis 13: The Blessing in the Breakup

Genesis 13: The Blessing in the Breakup

Series: Grace In The Journey Title: The Blessing in the Breakup Genesis 13 reminds us that faith often requires breaking-up—letting go of comfort, control, or even relationships—to make room for God’s greater purpose. Hard to do. Yet, when we choose peace over pride and faith over fear, God leads us into a wider place of blessing. That’s one of His "Kingdom Principles”. Do you need to Breakup? "Gen 13:9 Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me.”

I. The Return—From Carnality to Consecration

Failure isn’t final when faith returns!
God’s Recipe for Restoration:

a. Go back to the cause — Trace sin to its root.

b. Confess it as sin — Don’t rebrand it:
i. Not an “affair,” not a “habit,” not “a lapse of judgment”, not Satan?— it’s sin.

c. Get accountable — Tell someone. “Get into an advocacy relationship.”
i. Join a LG

d. Turn from it — Rely on His strength, not yours.

e. Return to the altar — Back to the place of worship.

Every day away from the altar is a wasted day, but never a worthless day-- if you return.

Christianity is, in many ways, a series of repenting and returning to God.
II. The Conflict — When Blessing Brings Tension
i. Nothing wrong with possessions as long as we’re not possessed by our possessions!

ii. 1 Timothy 6:10. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

iii. 17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
III. The Choice — Lot Walks by Sight, Abraham Walks by Faith
1. Abram gives Lot 1st choice — even though God had already promised him the land.

a. Grace in action — peace over pride.

b. “Do not merely look out for your own interests, but also for the interests of others.” – Philippians 2:4

c. Why did he respond this way?
i. Remember His source? “I will bless you”
ii. He trusted that God’s hand would provide more than his own hands could ever hold!
iii. He is confidently generous:

1. You can do generosity with confidence
2. You can give freely when you know the Giver fully.
IV. The Confirmation — God Speaks After the Separation

14 The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, 15 for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever. 16 I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted. 17 Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.” 18 So Abram moved his tent and came and settled by the oaks[b] of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Lord.

1. It’s not until Lot leaves that God speaks again to Abraham.
a. Some voices have to leave your life before God’s voice becomes clear again.

2. Abram lost nothing — he gave up land and gained clarity, communion, and received further confirmation.
The Takeaway

You never lose when you choose faith over fear.
You never fall behind when you let God lead ahead.
Separation from the world often precedes deeper revelation from God.
Abraham failed two tests — famine and fear — but passed this one with flying colors. Because this time, he let God take control.
Everything Lot had was because of Abraham’s relationship with God.

All that we have is because of God’s relationship with the Son, Jesus
We get all the blessings of God through Jesus.
