Passage to Ponder:
How do we live this daily? By living by a new set of values.
Why are values significant? Because they act as a GPS that informs our beliefs, attitudes, ultimately our behaviours.
What does this new set of values look like?
Why are values significant? Because they act as a GPS that informs our beliefs, attitudes, ultimately our behaviours.
What does this new set of values look like?
1. WE NO LONGER VALUE WHAT WE ONCE VALUED
~ we used to be far from God, enemies, separated from Him by our evil thoughts and actions, but now we are close to Him, made holy, blameless and without fault ~ Colossians 1:21–22 NLT
We are under new management, so we live differently.
We no longer value:
- What our former nature desires.
- Our desires to deviate sexually.
- Our desires for insatiable living.
- Our desires to follow our passions and feelings without control.
- Our desires for what we know is not what God desires.
- Our desires for more and for what others have, and valuing these things more than God.
The struggle is real, but we put these to death.
Nekroo = we deprive them of power and work to destroy their strength in our lives.
We do this, because one day God will hold all accountable.
2. WE NO LONGER ACT THE WAY WE ONCE ACTED TOWARD OTHERS

2. WE NO LONGER ACT THE WAY WE ONCE ACTED TOWARD OTHERS
We now put off acting these ways toward others:
- We resist anger and resentment from injustice.
- We resist reactions of passionate anger and blow ups.
- We resist a desire to injure or for the ill will of others.
- We resist speech that injures another’s good name.
- We resist talking foul, obscene, or vile words.
- We resist acts of deception as acceptable.
- We resist anything that resembles the old ways.
Like a mirror = our behaviour reveals our true values.
3. WE NO LONGER VIEW OURSELVES OR OTHERS THE WAY WE ONCE VIEWED
…for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. Put on your new nature and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him. (Colossians 3:9,10 NLT)
We no longer allow perceived identities and differences to distort our view and values.
We all, as humanity, stand on level ground before the cross.

We now put on our new nature and take on a new set of values and live by them because of the work of Christ, through the power of the Spirit.
“Give me the grace to do as you command, and command me to do what you will!” Prayer of Augustine (early church father)
REFLECTION QUESTIONS:
1. What are some of your personal values?
2. If you are follower of Christ, how have your values changed since you first started following?
3. If you consider that your behaviours are like a mirror revealing your values, what are some of your true values?
4. Why is the work of Christ and the power of the Spirit so important for believers to help them adopt a new set of values?
