Series - Thanksgiving - More Than a Holiday (pt 1/3)

"The Attitude of Gratitude" As we begin this holiday season, it is important to begin with Christ as the focus. It is very easy to go through the days of Thanksgiving without truly pausing to give thanks. What might it look like if we lived in a state of thanks - giving? Follow along this three-part series and let us make this year one to remember.

Boat Motors! Ugh!

They fail because we don't clean out the lines, or because we do not use them.
Something similar happens in our spiritual lives when we fail to be thankful.
Strange Partners:
Paul speaks about giving thanks, but also some things which should accompany - things we may not think about ordinarily.

A. Prayer...with Thanksgiving:
* Too often we only bring our 'needs' list to prayer. Begin with the giving of thanks...and the needs list will likely shrink.
* There is a protocol to prayer. David mentions it and was likely thinking of the priests and their rituals for entrance into the tabernacle.
B. Pleadings...with Thanksgiving:

The Greek word is 'supplication' which speaks of prayer that goes deeper out of a personal sense of lack or want.

Paul is teaching that even in the throes of great need, our greatest need is to be thankful.

We often thank God for the roses, but fail to thank Him for the thorns. There is value in the thorns; salvation even in the thorns of life.

"No pain, no palm; no thorns, no throne; no gall, no glory; no cross, no crown." - William Penn

C. Anxiety...with Thanksgiving:

It is a mis-statement and an non-truth to say Christians are never afraid.
We don't often appreciate the life-jacket until the boat is sinking.

When I am afraid...I will trust...grateful to have YOU, Lord on my side.

Fear reminds us to be thankful. Even the great fear of death, is conquerored as we are thankful for the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

D. Requests...with Thanksgiving:

The secret sauce...is not to avoid asking...but to ask 'with' thanksgiving.

What parent can resist a thankful child?
The Results of a Thankful Heart

A. A Peaceful Heart:

Peace is not the absence of trouble...but a confidence in God's presence..

Stonewall Jackson: "My religous belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed."

B. A Guarded Heart:

The human heart - our own thinking and passion - can be a most dangerous proposition.
Unguarded hearts tend to want the wrong things.

Human tensions arise over the need to be seen...over greed for position or title...over money that will pass away.

Ever wonder why humans have wars? James answers this for us.
What a blessing to give thanks...and consequently guard our hearts from these evils..

C. A Guarded Mind:

Our thoughts have power. Thoughts in line with God's Word bring protection and peace. Negative thoughts are like poison to the mind, body and spirit. "As a man thinks...so is he."
See the CUP

Thanksgiving - see the cup 'half full'.

Jesus looked into the cup of sin. And although He wished it to pass, He drank it...so we could drink the cup of communion.

We invite every believer to join in our communion service today. (You do not have to be a member of the church.)
Make peace with God. Be saved. (See Romans 10:9-10)
If you want someone to pray with you, it would be our delight.

The thorns are gone...because He saw the beauty in the thorns. Let us be thankful.
