Genesis 3:1-7
“Did God really say…?”
“Did God really say…?” leads to “God just wants me to be happy.”

Once we start believing that God’s main goal is our comfort, we stop worshiping Him – and start worshiping whatever we think will make us feel good in the moment.
Happy picture
Jesus didn’t’ die to make you comfortable; He died to make you new.
John 15:11
The first pursuit of happiness (instead of obedience) ended up breaking the world.

Genesis 3:1
Revelation 12:8
John 8:44
“The devil doesn’t show up in red pajamas with a pitchfork; he whispers in the voice of your own reason.” – The Gospel According to Satan, Jared Wilson
Genesis 2:16-17
The Original Gospel of Self:
· “If it looks good, it must be good.”
· “If it feels good, it must be right.”
· “If God really loved me, He’d want me happy.”
Sin isn’t always necessarily about being bad; it’s about wanting good things in the wrong way.
“Holy Affections” (John Wesley’s term) = Loving the right things in the right way, because grace has straightened what sin bent.

Genesis 3:6
1 John 2:16
The Garden causes us to ask: what fruit looks good to me but will cost me peace?
The Garden causes us to ask: what fruit looks good to me but will cost me peace? Is it:
· Appetite?
· Appearance?
· Achievement?
Psalm 37:4
God does want to give you the desires of your heart. The question is, whose desires are in there?
God isn’t pleased with consumer-faith; but He is with cross-shaped faith.
“delight” (Hebrew anag) = moldable, bendable, responsive
God doesn’t just give us what we desire – He gives us new desires.
Psalm 37:7
The closer you walk to the Source of your delight, your holiness, your joy, the more “wants” begin to sound like His.
Matthew 6:33
“seek” (Greek zeteite) = keep on seeking
“first” (Greek proton) = priority
1 Peter 1:15-16
Holiness is wholeness – it’s what we were made for.
John 10:10
John 15:9-11
Jesus’ order: Obedience - Love - Joy
Not: Feelings - Comfort - Happiness
God doesn’t just want you “happy.” He wants you His.
Grace doesn’t just forgive you; grace remakes you.
The first fruit of holiness: perspective.
The second fruit of holiness: contentment.
Philippians 4:11
Philippians 4:13
Joy flows from grace, not from gratification.
Hebrews 12:2
Cross before crown. Obedience before outcome. That’s the rhythm of holy joy.
We need to reframe blessing. Blessing isn’t a pain-free life. Blessing is God’s presence in every life.
We need to practice contentment. Gratitude. Simplicity. Service.
Will we reach for fruit that feels good, or follow the One who makes us truly whole?
“She took and ate.” – Genesis 3:6
“He took…and gave…” – Luke 22:19
Hebrews 12:2
The invitation today:
· Let’s stop asking, “Did God really say?”
· Start saying, “I believe what God has said.”
· Stop reaching for what looks good.
· Start receiving what is good
· Delight yourself in Him
Desire Audit:
· What fruit have I been reaching for?
· What promise have I believed — that if I just had this, I’d finally be happy?
· Where have I traded holiness for comfort, or “feel good” for “be whole”?
