Genesis 12: Grace in the Journey

Genesis 12: Grace in the Journey

Genesis 12:7–20 marks a crucial moment in Abraham’s faith journey. The journey begins with God’s promise and presence but quickly faces a test. That’s how it goes. Almost always. Excitement, exhilaration and a sense of calling: then the test. After building an altar in worship to the Lord, Abram’s faith wavers when famine strikes the land. Has your faith ever been tested? This passage reminds us that God’s covenant faithfulness isn’t dependent on our perfection.

The Basis for Abram’s life:

A Faith that can’t be tested, can’t be trusted. Warren Wiersbe

Faith must be verified and purified

After a great victory in the Lord, expect the enemy to attack or the Lord to test you, or both!

12:10 Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there.
Abram was not wrong for being concerned about feeding his family, but he was wrong in thinking God would not provide where He called him to live!

(1) Like most of us, he found it easier to trust God in the far-off promises then the right-now needs!...David Guzik
Abram was indestructible till the will of the Lord was fulfilled in his life.
· Faith often begins strong but is tested quickly.
Abram builds altars but also faces famine — a pattern familiar to every believer’s walk.

· Fear leads to compromise.
The Will of God will never take you where the grace of God cannot keep you.

· God’s grace overrules our failure.
Though Abram’s faith falters, God preserves His promise, demonstrating His sovereignty and mercy.

· Worship must continue even after we fail.
“But God is in the business of growing Abram into a man of great faith, and this requires circumstances where Abram must trust God. “Faith is not a mushroom that grows overnight in damp soil; it is an oak tree that grows for a thousand years under the blast of the wind and rain” (Barnhouse).
Abram comes full circle and ends up at the place of worship. Back at the altar between Bethel and Ai!
