Jesus has given us the church to help the process of healing.
How to Handle Suffering
“Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray.” - James 5:13

To suffer means to endure distress, withstand trouble, or bear hardship.
James Swanson, Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains: Greek (New Testament) (Oak Harbor: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 1997)
How to Respond to Joy
“Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.” - James 5:13

To be joyful is to be encouraged, happy, or cheerful.
To respond is to sing praises - to make music with your mouth.
What to Do When You’re Sick
“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.”
- James 5:14

The word sick here literally means to be weary or weak - not only physical illness but more so a sickness of the soul, mind, or spirit. It can refer to being emotionally or spiritually worn down due to issues such as discouragement, depression, lack of faith, offense, hurt, condemnation because of sin, spiritual battle, or even physical pain.
Therefore, confess and pray for each other
Because the unlimited power of God is available through the church, the fellowship has the power to sustain you and give you healing and strength for the battle.

- Confession of sin is essential, be transparent
- Prayer of the believers for you is essential
Healing Happens Through the Power-Filled Church
“My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.”
- James 5:19-20

This is not about salvation or justification, but about restoration from psychological and spiritual pain and suffering.

- Soul death refers to psychological death. Mental illness can come from wandering away from God into patterns of sin and isolation.
- The progression often looks like this: offense, to isolation, to bitterness, to temptation, to compromise, to being trapped in mental, psychological, or spiritual pain, hurt, or woundedness.
- To cover over many sins means that the effect of sin, which is separation from the power of God, is dealt with and restored.
The Power in the Church Is the Very Power of God
In the context of the church we are to be a family, a band of brothers, a sisterhood that contains the power to help each other heal.

“When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations, forever and ever, Amen.”
- Ephesians 3:14-21

Verse 16 emphasis - “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.”

- From His glorious and unlimited resources
- His will, to empower you with inner strength
- Through His Spirit
We need each other in order to succeed.
There is no room for arrogance, legalism, a critical spirit, and no room for giving up on each other.

- Confess your sins - be transparent and open as you become aware of sin struggles in your life. Confession means to agree. It is agreeing with God regarding your character and behavior, that his standard is right and that it is the standard you want to follow.
