Dig Deeper:
1. Have you ever read the book of Romans before? If so, what takeaways did you have from doing so?
2. Knowing that Romans isn’t just an incredibly theologically rich book but also a real letter to a real church in Rome, how does it shape your view of this book of the Bible as we begin this series?
3. Paul writes to them to clarify the gospel and unite them on mission. How can this same letter be used today to do the same thing? How are we similar to the original audience?
4. Read Romans 1:16. What do we do in a world of growing opposition to Jesus in the world?
5. Read Romans 1:1. What do we learn about Paul in this opening?
6. Read Romans 1:2-4. What do we learn about the gospel in this passage?
7. Read Romans 1: 5-6. What do we learn about what we have received and what we are called to do? What does it mean to “bring about the obedience of faith”?
8. Read Romans 1:7. Who is a saint? How are they able to be called saints? What does it mean to be a saint?
9. Read Romans 1:8-12. What is Paul saying to the Romans in this passage? What is uniting them?
10. Discuss or list ways in which we can be people of encouragement, speaking the love and grace of God into each other’s lives.
11. Read Romans 1:13-15. Augustine said, “the church is not a museum for saints, it is a hospital for sinners.” How is Paul living this out?
12. Read Romans 1:16. How is the gospel the answer to the division between God and people?
13. What does it mean to live unashamed of the gospel? How are we to live unashamed for the gospel in a world of division, anger, and lies?
14. In light of Romans 1:17, how do you experience the righteousness of God through faith? What does it mean to be "justified" and how does this reconciliation impact your daily life?
15. Read Romans 1:17. Paul quotes Habakkuk 2:4, “the righteous will live by faith.” What does that mean? How are we righteous?
16. Knowing the gospel if for everyone, what is one thing you can do today to live unashamed of the gospel?
Live It Out:
Are you living unashamed of the gospel?
Paul’s boldness in living for Jesus was rooted not in his strength, but in the power of God. The gospel that transformed Saul, a former persecutor of the church, into a missionary church planting Pastor is the same gospel that can change you. The same gospel that can change your family, friends, neighbors, enemies, and world. The gospel isn’t just a set of ideals. The gospel is the power of God that penetrates the human heart, opens spiritually blind eyes, and softens the heart enough to believe in Jesus, the risen Savior.
If you have already placed your faith in Jesus, throughout this week, explore what it means to live unashamed vs. ashamed. Spend time with God, asking Him to reveal to you in what ways you might be living as though you are ashamed of the gospel. Pray for opportunities to live unashamed of the gospel. Write down action steps that you can live out to display that you are unashamed. Examine your heart as to why you might hesitate in living out these action steps.
If you have not yet placed your faith in Jesus, you can also live unashamed through the power of the gospel. Jesus is perfect, sinless, and righteous. He took our sin upon Himself and paid the penalty for us on the cross. He gives us His righteousness so we can be made right with God the Father – not by our works, but by His finished work on the cross. Today, you can pray to Him and ask Him to come into your life. Call upon Jesus today. Repent (turn) from your sins and believe in Jesus.
