- Is there a tension between spiritual growth and spiritual greed?
- What is holy discontent?
- Can contentment be an excuse for laziness and a lack of vision?
1. Contentment can be learned
Learned through challenging circumstances.
“When God made David King, he didn’t give him a crown, he gave him Goliath.”
Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset
Learned through the experience of abundance and scarcity.
2. Contentment is rooted in understanding our mortality
Wealth is important, but it doesn’t confer ultimate value on a human person.
The words of Jesus -> “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” (Luke 12:15)
God‘s presence is enough.
The victor’s crown = Divine approval and the uninterrupted presence of God.
3. Contentment flourishes when our priorities are right sized
“Contentment and growth are not contradictory but synergistic—contentment fosters growth because it creates the right heart posture to embrace challenges, learn from them, and remain faithful. Growth without contentment can lead to frustration and burnout, while contentment without growth can lead to stagnation. Together, they form a balanced, mature spiritual life grounded in God’s unwavering provision and grace.” -Chad Brodrick
- Contentment without growth leads to stagnation.
- Growth without contentment leads to burnout (because it’s never enough).
