Big Idea: : In times of uncertainty and trial, right relationships aren’t just important, they’re essential.
I. Relationship with One Another (vv. 21-22).
A. Paul’s closing words here are more than just a routine doxology; it’s a carefully crafted word to further emphasize unity and empathy in the church. Throughout his letters, Paul stresses the importance of right doctrine and right behavior among God’s people. But here we see him also prioritizing the need for right relationships (cf. Phil. 4:2).
B. We see the emphasis in right relationships in:
1. The church as the Body of Christ (vv. 21-22; cf. 1 Cor. 12:14-20).
2. The importance of Christ-like behavior (cf. Col. 3:12-17).
3. The priority of love (cf. Col. 3:14).
C. Scripture makes it clear that relationships in the church aren’t just important, they’re essential. As the Body of Christ, we worship God together, grow together in our faith, and together are transformed into the image of Christ (cf. Rev. 7:9-10).
II. Relationship with God (v. 23; cf. 2 Cor. 5:14-18).
A. It goes without saying that right relationship with one another starts with right relationship with God (cf. 2 Cor. 5:14-18). Moreover, Scripture makes it clear that how we treat others—especially those of the household of faith—is to reflect God’s lovingkindness toward us (cf. Col. 3:12-14).
B. Building right relationships starts with:
1. Loving God as a priority (cf. Mk. 3:28-31).
2. Knowing Christ as a priority (cf. Phil. 3:7-9).
3. Resting in God’s grace (v. 23).
C. In all times, but especially in uncertain ones, the best thing we can do for ourselves and for others is to love God with all our being. It is the strengthening of our relationship with God and with others that will get us through the challenges we face.
