Your Heart Determines What and How You Give – Mark 12:35-44

Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!
Malachi 3:10 NLT

Being Much [Mark 12:35-37]

Whose Son Is the Messiah?
35 Later, as Jesus was teaching the people in the Temple, he asked, “Why do the teachers of religious law claim that the Messiah is the son of David?36 For David himself, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said, ‘The Lord said to my Lord,Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.’ 37 Since David himself called the Messiah ‘my Lord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?” The large crowd listened to him with great delight. Mark 12:35-37 NLT

- After several religious leaders’ again question Jesus, He stumps them with a question of His own.

- How could the coming Messiah be David’s son and David’s Lord at the same time?

- Jesus was setting these guys to show them and everyone listening what was truly the reason they were questioning Him and their hearts.

- Religious people are always a little to much…and you can see their heart…

Having Much [Mark 12:38-40]

38 Jesus also taught: “Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they like to parade around in flowing robes and receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces.39 And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and the head table at banquets. 40 Yet they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property and then pretend to be pious by making long prayers in public. Because of this, they will be more severely punished.” Mark 12:38-40 NLT

- Be very careful of religious people who just want praise, position, or prominence.

- When you see those who attempt to impress with a bunch of spiritual lingo but don’t never show grace and compassion to others have a worthless religion.

- A real and true…definition of RELIGION by Google says, it’s the belief in and worship of a superhuman power or powers, especially a God or gods.

- A TRUE and PURE RELIGION is Jesus.

- Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.

- Religious people who are “spiritual posers” will always live a life filled with condemnation…on themselves and with others.

Giving Much [Mark 12:41-44]

The Widow’s Offering
41 Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts.42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins.
43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions.44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.” Mark 12:35-44 NLT

- It’s either a comforting or uneasy thought to know and realize that Jesus knows what we give and why we give it. Because only He knows our motives and hearts.

- Jesus is saying…that the heart of giving is more important than the amount of giving.

- All of our investments will either be the stuff of future garage sales or forever Kingdom investment stories.

- Refuge is a place to invest in because Refuge is investing in you because and for Jesus.
