Have you ever received an unexpected gift? For some people gift giving is a love language? Not mine…but some people.
Read John 14:15-17
In the gospel of John, Jesus is speaking with His disciples and talking to them about who is coming after Him.
Make no mistake though, the Holy Spirit was always present.

The Holy Spirit was there in the beginning alongside the Father and the Son. As Mike mentioned last week, the Holy Spirit is:
Omnipresent: God fully encompasses all that exists
Omniscient: Fully comprehends all things; both actual and potential
Omnipotent: Power to accomplish anything He desires
To the New Testament believer, this same omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent Holy Spirit plays a very different role as a gift to the believer.
The Holy Spirit is now a gift to anyone who believes in the name of Jesus Christ and what the Son has done for us. He serves as a gift of guidance, empowerment and assurance.

The Promise of His Guidance
The Spirit was always part of the salvation plan for the believer. We cannot forget that the plan of the Father was to offer up the Spirit to His children.
Here we see Jesus commanding the disciples to wait…because the Spirit was not an optional gift to the believer, but rather an essential one.
God wanted to make sure the believer understood that when He left this world that He was not leaving them alone.
The gift of salvation through the Son saves us, but it does not stop there. Now we have part of the Triune God that is with us every single day.
This gift of guidance comes with Him speaking to us all the time. He is our guide in everyday life.

The Spirit guides us through scripture to speak to us and have His will be clear and evident in our lives.
There is a song by Vertical Worship that says:
“Cause when you speak, when you move,
When you do what only you can do, it changes us,
It changes what we see and what we seek.”
So, what do we do with this? Listen to His guidance.
Where do our desires lie? What are our motivations in life? We need to seek alignment in our lives with Him. When we seek a revival of our own hearts, that will lead to a revival in the church.
When we seek His guidance, He will share the truth.

2) The Promise of His Empowerment
Acts 1:6-8 shows us an example of His empowerment to the church.
The Holy Spirit gave the early church power to go and make disciples, build up the church, and to go and proclaim the gospel.
The mission was and is still very clear.
P2P —> Home —> Community —> World
The Holy Spirit empowers the believer with joy, with generosity, and with love. These are all things that the world struggles with. But these fruits are generously given to the believer to experience and share.
Are we, the church. Boldly proclaiming the gospel with the power of the Holy Spirit that is within us? (Peter and the 3000, Philip and the Eunuch, Stephen in Acts 6:8-10)

In the midst of turmoil in the political landscape and in our culture today, can we proclaim the JOY and OPTIMISM that the Holy Spirit brings?
In having the Holy Spirit, this should make us different than our unbelieving neighbors.
John 14:26, Galatians 5:16-18
I do not want to live a day without the power of the Spirit working through me. In everything I do, say, and react to.

3. The Promise of His Assurance
Take joy, believers, in the promise in the assurance of your salvation.
We do not have to live in fear for what comes next. We know the end of the story.
Hebrews 10:19-22
I’ve done extensive studies into world religions compared to Christianity. We are the ONLY faith where we don’t have to continually look over our shoulders.
1 John 4:4: The Spirit is far greater than the false hopes and lies of this world.
1 Corinthians 3:18: Everyday we are being transformed bu following the will of the Spirit in our lives.
-Sanctification
We start looking more and more like the Son and less like the world when we live in His assurance.
J.C. Ryle said in Holiness “Assurance enables a man to “always feel that he has something solid beneath his feet and something firm under his hands — a sure friend by the way, and a sure home at the end”
Remember that this gift is a gift the Lord delights in giving.

RESPOND, REFLECT & COMMUNION
I would like to give you a chance to respond to God…
-- What did God reveal about who he is to you today in our time in God’s word?
-- What did God reveal about what he has done or is doing in our time in God’s word?
-- What did you learn about who you are as we looked at these stories today?
-- What did you learn about what you are supposed to do?
—> Let's take a minute to thank Him, respond to Him, confess our sins to Him, examine our hearts before we take communion...
—> WHAT IS JESUS SAYING TO YOU TODAY?
—> WHAT IS JESUS ASKING YOU TO DO?
