We don't see things as they are... we see them as we are.

We are beautiful and we are broken.

God is Justice, and he is Grace.

How does a God who is both Justice and Grace relate to people who are beautiful and broken?

Somehow sin was going to be dealt with in a single day, and the result will be that people will be able to enjoy fellowship and rest with each other.

The earliest recorded description of the gospel is a statement in 1 Corinthians 15. It is simply a statement of events.
Somehow, all the promises to Israel and Judah would be fulfilled in one person who was also called YHWH.
The gospel writers seek to help us understand the significance of those events.
Jesus himself sees his purpose as twofold
At the start of his ministry, he announced his understanding of the nature of his calling by quoting Isaiah.
John, the last gospel written, attempts to help us more fully glimpes the purpose of Jesus

If the foundational problem of human beings is seeing what is true, then the foundational answer is light to help us see.

Jesus came to help us see, and also to invite us into his family.
Jesus came as the embodiment of God's glory
Jesus came to show us the path back to God by showing us who God is.
Jesus comes to us from outside our self-centeredness and calls us to lift our eyes beyond ourselves to where truth and grace are found.
Being a follower of Jesus means understanding your view of reality is limited.

Being a follower of Jesus means facing your own beauty and real brokenness.

Being a follower of Jesus means recognising that God is a person who cares about both Justice and Grace and that you can never, in your own strength, be completely like that, even though you want to.

Being a follower of Jesus means being a student of history and realising that the God of the universe turned up in first-century Palestine as a Jewish carpenter.

Being a follower of Jesus means finding a pattern for life in his words and actions

Ultimately, though, being a follower of Jesus means finding a relationship with the shepherd who speaks directly with his sheep,
Where do you find life?

What is the shepherd saying to you right now?
Questions:

1. “We don’t see things as they are… we see them as we are.”
Can you think of a time when your perspective was changed and you saw something differently? What helped shift your view?

2. The prophets (Jeremiah 33, Zechariah 3) spoke of a day when God would deal with sin and bring peace.
How do you think those promises prepared people to understand who Jesus was and what he came to do?

3. In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul sums up the gospel as events: Christ died, was buried, was raised, and appeared.
Why do you think the early church emphasised the events themselves rather than explanations first? What does that mean for how we share faith today?

4. In Matthew 1, Jesus is called Immanuel — God with us.
Where do you most need to experience “God with you” in your life right now?

5. In Mark 10, Jesus redefines greatness as serving rather than being served.
How does this challenge the way leadership usually works in workplaces, families, or even churches?

6. In John 1, Jesus is described as bringing both grace and truth.
Why is it hard for us to hold both together, and what happens when we lean too far into only one?

7. In John 10, Jesus says his sheep listen to his voice.
How do you personally discern the Shepherd’s voice? What practices or experiences have helped you hear him more clearly?

Closing Reflection:
What is one step you sense God inviting you to take this week in response to what you’ve heard and discussed?

Pray for each other.
