Thessalonica was the largest and most important city in Macedonia - (about 200,000 people and was the kingdom of Alexandar the Great who had conquered the world).
It was also the capital city.
AND it was along the Via Ignacia, the Roman highway that took Rome all the way to the Orient. East and West converged on Thessalonica.

It is impossible to over stress the importance of the arrival of Christianity in Thessalonica as it would spread east to all Asia and west until it stormed the city of Rome. This city was crucial in making Christianity a world religion.

Thessalonica was one of the wealthiest and most flourishing trade centers in Rome Because of the trade route and the seaport - it was also a gathering sport for pagan religions and cultural influences. Religiously it offered something for everyone - including the cult to the Roman Emperor which declared Caesar to be divine. FYI - linking politics and religion together offered an effective means to legitimize and maintain their power. The city fostered devotion to the cult in order to have good relations with Rome. Any perceived attack on the cult of the emperor was viewed as a serious threat to the city's economic and political well-being.
