Evil and suffering are not contrary to Scripture; they are central.

The whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. Romans 8:22

It has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake. Philippians 1:29

If love is a choice, suffering is a possibility.

Choose this day whom you will serve Joshua 24:15

You are free to eat from any tree… but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 2:16–17

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Eph. 6:12

God gave us free will because He wanted a relationship.

I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God…Deuteronomy 30:19–20

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16

The presence of pain is not the absence of love.

My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you. For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights. Proverbs 3:11-12

So, although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, he stayed
where he was for the next two days. John 11:5-6
