1. Opening question: Who is one of your favorite sports heroes? What do you admire about them?
2. The sermon was based on Hebrews 11:39-40 and Hebrews 12:1-3. What do you remember about each of the main points? What stood out to you?
3. Review Hebrews 12:1-3
a) According to this passage, Christians are running a race. Why is purity from sin important as we run?
b) What is the great cloud of witnesses that we are surrounded by? (refer to Hebrews 11 and note verses 33 and 34)
c) In what way do these people surround us? How does this help us?
d) What are some things that hinder us from running the race well? What tends to trip you up?
e) According to this passage, how can we deal with these hindrances?
f) What do you think the joy was that was “set before” Jesus?
g) What is the joy that is set before us as we run?
4. Read Hebrews 12:4-11
a) What do you think verse 4 means? What does it say about how committed we should be to fighting against sin in our lives? Who did shed blood to deal with sin?
b) Who does the Lord discipline?
c) Why does the Lord discipline us?
d) Do you feel loved when the Lord disciplines you? Why or why not?
e) In what way do you think the words “discipline” and “disciple” are related?
5. Read Hebrews 12:22-24. How can these verses encourage us when we are struggling?
6. Are you partnered with anyone who helps you run your race well? If not, begin to pray for that kind of friend. After praying, approach someone to ask them to be accountability/prayer partners with you.
Spend some time praying that God will inspire you to run the race of faith well. Ask Him for the power of His Spirit to help you run with perseverance.
