Big Idea: Jesus’ divine act of humility sets the tone and example for God’s people to follow.
I. The Divine Example of Humility (vv. 5-8)
A. In verses 1-5 Paul admonishes the church to be unified, and a
key to unity is humility. To further emphasize the importance of
humility, he points to the example of Jesus, who is fully God
and willingly became fully man that we might be reconciled to
our Heavenly Father through His sacrifice.
B. In Jesus’ divine example of humility, we see:
1. A divine attitude (v. 5; cf. Mk. 10:42-45) – This is a mindset
focused on service and sacrifice.
2. A divine priority (vv. 5-6; cf, Jn. 1:1-4, 14) – Though fully
divine, Jesus willingly set aside the glory and privileges of
heaven to become fully human and live among us.
3. A divine sacrifice (vv. 7-8; cf. 2 Cor. 5:21; Col. 1:19-20) –
Jesus gave His life to pay for our sins and reconcile us to
God.
C. Paul’s emphasis here is as much practical as it is theological. He
isn’t just teaching us about unity and humility: he is showing us
the ultimate example so that we would learn the right attitude
and behavior as God’s people.
II. The Divine Example (vv. 5-11)
A. Most scholars believe these verses are an early church hymn.
Paul’s main point in using this hymn is not to prove Jesus’
divinity—that is a given here—but to emphasize His supreme
example of humility as a template for the church.
B. In this passage we see:
1. Jesus’ condescension (vv. 6-7) – Jesus, fully God, became
fully man and set aside His divine prerogatives.
2. Jesus’ obedience (v. 8; cf. Heb. 5:7-9) – Jesus’ obedience
became a model for us and results in our salvation.
3. Jesus’ exaltation (vv. 9-11; cf. Rev. 5:6-10) – Jesus is
worthy of all praise, glory, and honor.3. Jesus’ exaltation (vv. 9-11; cf. Rev. 5:6-10) – Jesus is worthy of all praise, glory, and honor.
C. Jesus’ example is not some abstract idea, but a call to follow
His lead in humbly loving others in practical ways seen in
service, giving, and sacrifice.
