The Text In Context

"It is indeed unfortunate that the term 'talent' means something very different today from what our Lord meant when He told this parable. The talent was the largest measurement of money in those days... While commentators differ somewhat over the approximate value of a talent in today’s economy, all would agree that it was a large amount of money. Some say that it was the equivalent to 20 years’ wages for a common laborer. We must remember, then, that a talent is a measure of money; it is not a reference to abilities." 1. Everything...

1. Everything I think I have, is actually on loan.

2. Everything...

2. Everything on loan to me, matches my management capacity.

3. My...

3. My fear maintains the status quo and gains nothing.

4. My...

4. My courageous management reaps rewards.
Next Steps
1. Prayerfully take a sober, exhaustive, positive inventory of all you “have” - physically, mentally, socially, emotionally, spiritually, & materialistically.

2. Pray with thanksgiving to God for your inventory!

3. Prayerfully consider what it may mean to courageously invest & manage your inventory to God’s glory.
Growth Group / Personal Reflection Questions
1. What does “each according to one’s ability” (v15) show about how God entrusts resources? Why do you think the master gave different amounts to each servant? How can we faithfully live with what we’ve been entrusted with, even if it seems less then some and more than others?

2. Why did the 3rd servant bury his talent instead of investing it, (vs 24-25)? What fears does the servant voice about the master & how do these reflect a distorted view of God?

3. How does the master’s response to the 1st two servants illustrate what faithful management looks like? How do you feel about the master’s praise based, not on the volume of resources allocated, but on the faithfulness to what’s given?

4. What difference would it make in your life and in our community, if you invested your resources/talents instead of burying them?
