B. Thirty Pieces of Silver
Jeremiah 19:1-13 The Potter

3. The Worthless Shepherd
Actions of a Foolish Shepherd:
A. Does not care for those destroyed
B. Does not seek the young
C. Does not heal the maimed
D. Does not nourish the healthy
E. Devours the sheep for personal gain
Practical Application:
Zechariah chapter 11 is ultimately a picture of God dealing with the shepherd (leaders of Israel) for their selfishness, and the sheep (people in general) for their rebellion against their True Shepherd. God’s people regularly go through cycles of “blessing - disobedience - judgment - repentance - blessing . . .”

Jesus is our True Shepherd, and we must hold our spiritual leaders to high standards as "under-shepherds".
Discussion Questions - Re-read our main passage from this week (Zechariah 11:1-17) and then with your Growth Group, family, friends, etc. thoughtfully answer the following:

1. How have you seen cycles of blessing, disobedience, judgement, repentance play out in your own life?

2. Where are you at in this cycle right now?

3. In what way have you been a wicked shepherd (selfish, self-seeking, not using the power and position God has given you for the good of others)?

4. Have you seen spiritual leaders abuse their positions and act as “foolish shepherds”?

5. Does Matthew’s attribution of Zechariah’s “30 pieces” to Jeremiah cause you any concern with the reliability of the Bible? If so, please look at the two articles referenced below.

6. What’s your next step in response to this message?
Memory verse for this series:
Zechariah 8:7-8
7 Thus says the Lord of hosts: Behold, I will save my people from the east country and from the west country, and I will bring them to dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. And they whall be my people, and I will be their God, in faithfulness and in righteousness.
