New Covenant
2025 Theme: Faithfulness
Series Title: Covenant Faithfulness
Scripture: Luke 22:14-20
August 31st, 2025
Something to think about:

If given the chance, most of us prefer to have something that is new rather than used. New things straight from the store give us an endorphin rush. The new smell of a thing straight from the package gives us a temporary high of sorts. However, before too long, what is new becomes old, outdated, and tossed aside, and we move on to the next new thing. But what if we received something new that actually stayed new? Then its relevance and usefulness would forever remain the same and never become outdated.

As we close our series today entitled “Covenant Faithfulness,” we look at the capstone of GOD’s covenant agreements with His people: “The New Covenant.” The New Covenant is GOD’s once and for all final covenant through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Through the broken body and the spilled blood, Jesus offered true and total forgiveness of sin to all who would by faith put their trust in Him. This New Covenant would make the Old Covenant obsolete[1] and usher in a new age of salvation by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. And it all started at the Last Supper. Let’s take a closer look:

[1] Hebrews 8:13.
Key Point: “GOD’s once and for all covenant of grace was offered to the world through the death of Christ, Jesus.”

The elements of this covenant agreement are as follows:
1 The ______________; the ______________.

Luke 22:19 (NLT), He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
2. The ______________; the ______________.

Luke 22:20 (NLT), After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.
3. The future ______________.

Luke 22:17-18 (NLT), 17
Something to take home:

All the other covenants through the Old Testament point to the New Covenant in Christ. Consider the following:

· The Noahic Covenant, where GOD promised never to destroy the world again by flooding it, would find its fulfilment in the fact that GOD so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him would not perish but receive eternal life.

· The Abrahamic Covenant that promised to make Abraham’s descendants into a great nation that would be a blessing to the world would find its fulfillment in the birth of a Savior who would usher in salvation and forgiveness of sin for all nations who would believe in Him.

· The Mosaic Covenant that made the nation of Israel a kingdom of priests and a holy nation as representatives of GOD would find fulfillment in a perfect Priest and sacrificial Lamb who would take the sin of the world upon Himself and intercede at the right hand of the Father on our behalf.

· The Davidic Covenant that promised David an eternal house and kingdom would be fulfilled through the birth of a child to a virgin named Mary, a descendant of David in the small city of Bethlehem (the city of David). This child would be the King of kings and the Lord of lords, and of His kingdom there would be no end.

So you see, the New Covenant through the blood of Jesus Christ solidifies and fulfills the prior covenants and ushers in a new agreement of salvation by grace through faith in Christ. There is no longer a need for a blood sacrifice because Jesus paid it all! There is no longer a need for burnt offerings or sin offerings or grain offerings and the like, because Jesus accomplished and fulfilled all of the previous covenants through the cross and the empty tomb.

Read Matthew 26:17-26.

GOD’s once and for all covenant of grace was offered to the world through the death of Christ, Jesus.

The only bread served at a traditional passover meal is unleavened (no yeast) bread. When the first Passover occurred (Exodus 12), the Israelites did not have time to allow their bread to rise, so they had to eat it in a hurry.Eventually, yeast became a symbol of sin. When Jesus takes the bread of the Passover meal with His disciples and says, “Take and eat, this is my body,” what is He indicating?

Eventually, in Jewish tradition, the cups of wine that were drunk during the Passover represented the promises of GOD to the Israelites in Exodus 6:6-7.These cups are listed as follows:1) the cup of sanctification, 2) the cup of deliverance, 3) the cup of redemption, and 3) the cup of praise. It is held that Jesus drank the 3rd cup that night with His disciples as He gave thanks for it and said, “Drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the new covenant between God and His people.”What was Jesus indicating about the significance of this cup as it relates to His blood?

How would you define the New Covenant and its importance (Hebrews 7:23-8:13)?How does this impact you, and does it give you hope for the future?
