Now at first, this may seem like a simple rehashing of the first commandment. We get it. “No other gods” and, yes, that IS also implied within this commandment, but it is more than that. This FURTHER emphasizes what the first commandment highlighted; that God wants to be in relationship with us and rightly acknowledged for who He is.
God wants to be in relationship with us and rightly acknowledged for who He is.
A lot of times we think of idols as objects of foreign worship. What God is stating here is that reducing Him to some idol that is easily understood, manipulated, visualized, and left behind in moments where having a god is inconvenient.(God isn’t contained in a statue….or a church!!!!)
You cannot understand God. You cannot properly depict Him. You cannot manipulate Him. You absolutely do not decide when He does and does not see you.
Making God into something much smaller, less significant, and less magnificent is offensive to Him.
To do anything less than love THE REAL God is to hate Him.
