Kingdom: The Ascent Pt 7 - What about divorce?

Kingdom: The Ascent Pt 7 - What about divorce?

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus lays out a bold vision for life in the Kingdom of God—one that doesn’t just tweak our behavior, but transforms our hearts. From salt and light to loving enemies, from anger to integrity, we're called to higher ground. This summer, we’ll climb verse by verse through these challenging teachings, discovering how to live with purpose, purity, and passion in a world that desperately needs the hope of Jesus. It’s not an easy ascent, but the view is worth it.

Be the kind of person whose word doesn’t need window dressing.
• Truth doesn’t need dressing up.
• Love doesn’t need loopholes.
• And integrity doesn’t need extra words.
Rabbi Shammai took the strict approach. He emphasized the word “indecent”
Rabbi Hillel was much more b. He focused on the word “something”
Rabbi Akiva took it even further. He emphasized “displeasing”
When you twist Scripture to fit your tone, you no longer hear God’s voice, you just echo your own desires.
When you do that with a text from God, it creates deception.
• “When is divorce okay?”
• “When is it not?”
• “What if I’ve already been divorced?”
• “Can I remarry?”
• Sexual immorality (Matthew 5:32; 19:9)
• Abandonment by an unbelieving spouse (1 Corinthians 7:15)
Am I surrendered to the heart of God in this?
What if Jesus is shifting our question? From “When can I leave?” To “How do I love like God?”
1. Prioritize Your Spouse Above Every Other Human Relationship
- Your spouse should be the highest-priority relationship you have on this earth.
- Genesis 2:24: “A man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
2. Value Sexual Intimacy as Sacred and Unifying
- It’s the one connection that God designed for just the two of you
- 1st Corinthians 7:3: The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.
3. Invite God into the Middle of Your Marriage
- It won't work if God is a distant spectator to your marriage.
- Psalm 127: Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.
God moves toward people who have been wounded by relational pain.
What did you come here carrying?
God hates what broke you. But He loves you enough to make you whole again.
