Sermon: Defying the Darkness
Questions:
1. Opening question: When have you had to take a stand for something that wasn’t popular or easy? What gave you the courage to do it?
2. The sermon was based on Hebrews 11:23-28. What do you remember about each of the main points? What stood out to you?
3. Read Hebrews 11:23 and Exodus 1:15–2:10.
a) What risks did Moses’ parents take by hiding him?
b) How might their decision challenge our approach to obeying God in a culture that pressures us to compromise?
c) When is it right to disobey human authority? (see Acts 5:27–29)
4. Read Hebrews 11:24–26 and Philippians 3:7–11.
a) Why was it significant for Moses to refuse his Egyptian identity and privileges?
b) What “worldly identities” might Christians today need to renounce or resist?
c) How does Paul’s attitude toward his past compare with Moses’ choice?
5. Read Hebrews 11:27 and 2 Timothy 1:7–12.
a) How did Moses "see Him who is invisible," and how did that give him courage?
b) What spiritual “enemies” or fears hold believers back from bold obedience today?
c) How does a focus on God's presence help us face fear?
6. Read Hebrews 11:28 and Exodus 12:1–30.
a) Why was keeping the Passover by faith so important for Moses and Israel?
b) How does the blood of the lamb in Exodus 12 point to Jesus and our salvation? (See 1 Corinthians 5:7 and John 1:29)
c) What does it look like to receive and trust in God’s provision for deliverance today?
7. What “darkness” are you currently facing—whether internal (fear, sin, doubt) or external (injustice, pressure, trials)? How might God be calling you to respond by faith this week?
8. Prayer response. Ask God for:
a) Bold faith like Moses
b) The strength to reject false identities
c) Victory over fear and spiritual oppression
d) Fresh gratitude and assurance in God’s saving work through Jesus
