Sermon Title: The Ephesian 12 and the Baptism in the Holy Spirit
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them.” - vs. 2
The role of the Holy Spirit in salvation: Ephesians 4:13-14,“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”
Paul wouldn’t ask believers about receiving the “marked with a seal” of the Holy Spirit since they believed, because:

1. They would have received the Holy Spirit instantly,“when (they) believed.”
2.When we are sealed with the Holy Spirit at salvation there is no identifiable action.
Do you know what does have an accompanying sign? The Baptism in the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:4, 10:46)
Acts 19:2-4, The Ephesian 12 had experienced the Baptism of John, which was a baptism of repentance.
“As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” - vs. 5
What we would call what they did today? Believers baptism (Matthew 28:19).
Acts 2:41,“41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptizedand added to the church that day...”
Acts 10:47-48,“47 “Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?”48 So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ...”
“Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.” - vs. 6
These men were then filled with the Holy Spirit and they all spoke in tongues and prophesied.
Let’s look at the Ephesian 12 pattern:
They received Christ at Savior
They were baptized in water
They were baptized in the Holy Spirit
Why did Paul lead with and then finish with the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? See Acts 1:6-8
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit wasn’t just for a small group of people, at one time.
It is for all believers, for all time.
