The Spirituality of the Psalms: Our Feet Are Standing In Your Gates

The Psalms have been called "The Prayer Book of the Bible". In them we find every manner of reason for thanksgiving or cause for concern. We do not have to feel everything they name, of course, but we can rest assured that, collectively, their words are able to express everything we need to express, and every emotion known to humankind. In them we can learn how to pray, how to celebrate, and discover wonderful advice for life.

The Spirituality of the Psalms: Our Feet Are Standing in Your Gates
Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
Pastor Kurt Kincanon
Question to Ponder.
Reflect on the pilgrimage taken by the Jewish people for the 3 festivals (Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles/Booths). What do you find challenging about the geographical rigors of their travel? What inspires you about their commitment to have their feet standing in the gates of Jerusalem? How can this apply to your current context of worship?
Question to Ponder
How do the Psalmists instructions for how to pray for the peace of Jerusalem in Psalm 122: 6-9 inform how you might pray for the church?
Question to Ponder.
Pastor Kurt shared a story of a time he was absent from worship in community for several weeks and how it felt to have his feet again standing within the gates. Have you had an experience like this? How do you connect that experience with Psalm 122?
Question to Ponder.
Worship in the context of community is more than singing worship songs. What components of the Sunday worship experience at The Grove Covenant Church do you find the most meaningful for the purpose of sharpening you for the time spent outside the gates? What can you do to better prepare for the “sharpening” experience of worship in community?
Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
O Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of your people who call upon you, and grant that they may know and understand what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
