The Shepherd King - When God Says No (2 Samuel 7)

The Shepherd King - When God Says No (2 Samuel 7)

Skipping forward in the story of David, he has finally established his throne and is in a time of peace. David begins to make plans to honor God by building Him a house. God responds to David through the prophet, Nathan, and tells David he won’t be the one to do so. David’s response to God saying no gives us a powerful example of how we, too, can respond to God shooting down our plans.

Summary of 1 Samuel 27 - 2 Samuel 6

1 Samuel 27:
David, fearing for his life due to Saul’s pursuit, seeks refuge in Philistine territory under King Achish of Gath. David is given the town of Ziklag to live in.

1 Samuel 28:
Saul, desperate and facing the Philistine army, seeks guidance from a necromancer, the Witch of Endor, since God no longer answers him. The spirit of Samuel appears and foretells Saul’s defeat, death, and the end of his dynasty.

1 Samuel 29:
The Philistine leaders, suspicious of David, refuse to allow him to join their battle against Israel. David returns to Ziklag.

1 Samuel 30:
David’s town, Ziklag, is raided by the Amalekites. After recovering their families and possessions, David strengthens his position and shares the spoils with his men and others in Judah.

1 Samuel 31:
In the final battle with the Philistines, Saul is critically wounded and ultimately falls on his own sword to avoid capture. His sons, including Jonathan, are also killed.

2 Samuel 1:
David hears of Saul and Jonathan’s deaths and mourns deeply. He writes a lament for Saul and Jonathan.

2 Samuel 2:
David is anointed king over Judah in Hebron, while Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, is made king of Israel. Conflict breaks out between David’s forces, led by Joab, and those loyal to Ishbosheth, resulting in a civil war.

2 Samuel 3:
Abner, the commander of Ishbosheth’s army, defects to David after a dispute with Ishbosheth. David makes peace with Abner, but Joab, angry over Abner’s killing of his brother, kills Abner. David mourns Abner’s death.

2 Samuel 4:
Ishbosheth is assassinated by two of his own men. David punishes the murderers and laments the fall of Saul’s house.

2 Samuel 5:
David is anointed king over all Israel in Hebron. He captures Jerusalem (which becomes the capital) from the Jebusites and establishes it as his political and spiritual center. David also defeats the Philistines twice, securing his reign.

2 Samuel 6:
David brings the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem with great celebration.
Everyone makes plans, and that's ok.
God shoots down plans.
God’s No is often the beginning of a conversation that reveals His Yes to you.
What do you do when you have a good plan and God shoots it down?

1. Listen to Him, and receive the Word of God.
2. Rest.

Our ability to rest in response to God’s revelation of what He’s doing directly reflects how much we trust Him.
“One of my colleagues likes to remind people that Jesus never talks about our establishing God’s kingdom or furthering it or building it or extending it. In the Gospels, the only things we do to God’s kingdom are wait for it, see it, enter it, seek it, receive it, inherit it, and declare that it has come. In other words, we don’t have an active relationship to it at all. In U.S. culture, this is an unpopular point to make, because people like to feel they can make a difference. They want to achieve. I enjoy watching students shift in their seats unhappily when I repeat my colleague’s point. We don’t like the fact that the gospel is about what God has done for us and not about what we do for God.”
John Goldingay
"When you get on board with God's plan, it's easier to loosen your grip on yours."
Ben Stuart
3. Run in the path of His commands.
