Sermon: Leaning into Promise

Questions:
1. Opening question: Share a time someone passed something valuable to you (a skill, tradition, heirloom, or piece of advice). How has it shaped you?
2. The sermon was based on Hebrews 11:20-23. What do you remember about each of the main points? What stood out to you?
3. Read 2 Corinthians 4:16–18 and Hebrews 12:1–2
a) Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph blessed their children while God’s promises were still unfulfilled. What helps you keep God’s unseen promises more vivid than your current circumstances?
4. Read Colossians 3:1–7. What dangers are there in focusing on present pressures rather than eternal hopes? Share examples.
5. Read Psalm 78:1–7.
a) What practical ways can we tell “the coming generation” about God’s works—at home, in church, or in the community? (See also Deuteronomy 6:4–9; 2 Timothy 1:5).
b) How does the relay baton image challenge your view of success and legacy? (See Proverbs 13:22; 1 Corinthians 3:6-9).
6. Read Genesis 47:31.
a) Jacob worshiped “leaning on the top of his staff” (some translations say “bed”). Where have you encountered God most deeply in seasons of weakness? (See 2 Corinthians 12:9–10; Psalm 73:26).
b) Read Mark 12:41–44. Compare Jacob’s posture with the widow who gave two coins. What do both teach us about authentic worship?
7. Read Hebrews 11:23 and Exodus 1:15–2:3
a) Moses’ parents “were not afraid of the king’s edict.” What current “edicts” (cultural pressures or fears) tempt believers to shrink back, and how might faith respond? (See also Acts 5:27-32; Daniel 3:16-18).
b) What spiritual disciplines or community practices help us act with courage when the cost is high? (See Ephesians 6:18–20; Acts 4:29–31).
8. If you could hand one “baton of faith” to the next generation this week, what would it be—and how will you pass it on?
9. Prayer response:
a) Thank God for the promises that extend beyond your lifetime.
b) Confess where fear or short-sightedness has hindered your faith or witness.
c) Ask the Holy Spirit to help you worship in weakness and rise with courage when needed.
