Sermon Title: Closing up Paul’s 2nd Missionary Journey
vs. 18,
“There he shaved his head according to Jewish custom, marking the end of a vow.” Paul probably took a modified Nazarite Vow, which expressed total
dedication to God and to His will. The hair was always cut at the conclusion of the period of the vow.
(See Numbers 6:5)
vs. 22a,From there he went up and visited the church at
Jerusalem...”
First, recapping to his covering, the Jerusalem church, all that God was doing. No doubt Paul shared with the Jerusalem church how he successfully had brought to the churches on his 2nd journey the agreed upon the Council at Jerusalem Acts 15.
vs. 22b, “...and then went back to Antioch.”
When Paul was done in Jerusalem he made his way to his sending church, Antioch, and made sure to report back to them all that God was doing.
vs. 23, “After spending some time in Antioch, Paul went back through
Galatia and Phrygia, visiting and strengthening all the believers.”
Paul was not just interested in converts, Paul truly wanted to make
disciples. He wasn’t for the moment, he was about the follow up and
follow through.
vs. 24, “Meanwhile, a Jew named Apollos...”
Who is Apollos? Just from our text:
- Apollos was a Jew.
- An Eloquent Speaker
- He knew the Old Testament Scriptures well.
- He had been taught “the way of the Lord”
- He taught about Jesus, with an “enthusiastic spirit”
vs. 26-28, Two things about Apollos:
One: He received the correction from Aquila & Priscilla.
- 2 Timothy 3:16,
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”
- John 16:8,
“And when he (the Holy Spirit) comes, he will convict the world of its sin...”
- 1 Peter 5:2-3, “...shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you...”
Two: His ministry flourished after the correction
What’s our take home today?
God uses humble, teachable people to strengthen the church and spread the gospel.
