Romans 10:5-10
“It’s Too Simple”
Introduction
1. Romans 10:1-4 gives 4 reasons you are not saved: Your Performance…Zeal, but not according to knowledge. Your Problem…Set about to establish your own righteousness. Your Pride…Your own righteousness. You think that you are good enough. Your Plea…What have
you done with Christ?
2. The Jew felt the Gospel was ‘too simple’. I must do more. What about you?
3. “What must I do to be saved?” Do you find it’s too simple?
4. Romans 10:5-10 Paul is still on the subject of being ‘saved’. What does it mean to ‘believe’?
“What must I do to be saved?” Do you find it’s too simple?
I. SALVATION IS NOT DOING THE IMPOSSIBLE 10:5-7
In these verses 3 impossibilities are listed. BUT salvation is not found in doing the
impossible:
A. Performance Based 5
Keep the Law.
1.Paul quotes from (Lev. 18:5) and points out that in order to be saved by the Law that person must live up to all the precepts of the Law. One slip, one violation and you are guilty of the whole law!
2.If you can do that you have the title dee to heaven. “Doing”
3.There is one major problem…only One is perfect. God!
*The Law according to chapter 3 is a Mirror…A Magistrate…A Measure…all are given to show our true condition.
*According to (9:32) the Jew way trying to draw life from the Law. That is impossible. Law is me doing something for God. We try to please a holy God by ‘doing’. When we do enough, He will be appeased…how much is enough? We need Jesus. We need life! Verse 6 the righteousness which is of faith!
B.Perseverance Based 6
Bring Christ down from heaven…another Incarnation, a mystical voyage. Faith doesn’t talk like this!
1.Paul again takes them to the Word (Deut. 30:11-14):
*Faith by Grace has always been God’s method. Whether giving of the Law or giving of the Messiah.
*Verse 11 What I command you is not far off (impossible). Then Paul relates what Moses said about the Law to Christ. Both were by faith!
2. To be saved no one need to persevere to go to heaven to bring the law down, so
no one need to bring the Messiah down. Christ has come.
3.How could anyone do anything to bring the Messiah. IMPOSSIBLE! Today:
pray through…persevere…hang on…let go…cry…weep…confess…shout, etc.
C.Perspiration Based 7
How far will you go? To what extremes???
1.Another Resurrection. Paul continues to quote (Deut. 30:11-14)
2.When it comes to eternal things we need Absolute Truth! Jus as Moses said, there was no need for anyone to go to across the sea to find the Law. No one need to go to the abyss to bring Messiah up. Christ is already risen!
3.To be saved God does not ask the impossible!
“What must I do to be saved?” Do you find it’s too simple?
II. SALVATION IS BY DOING THE INDESCRIBABLE 10:8-10
How do you describe what goes on in some ones’ heart?
A. Salvation Is Close 8
Salvation is near. How near…as near as your mouth and heart.
1.The Word is near. Reema…the spoken word. That is the word of faith!
2.It is the Gospel message concerning faith. The righteousness of faith is only found in Jesus Christ! Do you remember when you said, ‘yes’ to Jesus Christ?
B.Salvation Is Calculated 9
This is perhaps the clearest statement on how to be saved. God’s righteousness is not difficult and distant. Following the order of verse 8…mouth/heart. There seems to be two requirements:
1.Confess with your mouth (this an acknowledgement to ourselves of what we believe) Jesus as Lord
*Confess is to agree with someone in reference to something. I agree with God’s Word and what it says about Jesus. Jesus is the One who died on the Cross. I give Him the right to take control of my life. Up to this point we have been Lord of our lives. Lordship is seen in one’s daily witness. It is done all the time. We testify of who He is…Lord! Verse 3 up to now we would not submit. We have been running our affairs, feeling we have the right to make our decisions, doing what we want.
*Then the Gospel came. Jesus, the One who died for my sins and took my place I give Him the right to my life to do what He wants. He takes control. Sign over the Title deed. You accept Him as the One in charge!
2. Believe in you heart that God raised Him from the dead.
*Good News applies to the heart. It is the core of what you are…will, intellect
and emotion.
*It is not an intellectual ascent. Resurrection was proof He died for our sins.
Proof His death was the payment for my sins. That payment was accepted by
God the Father as adequate. Calculated to meet man’s need world-
wide…SAVED!
*At that moment God does something! Divine life is implanted. Your sins are
forgiven. God imparts to you a right standing in His sight. He gives you His
spirit. He makes you a son and part of His family. He gives you an inheritance
for eternity. You are given Jesus Himself to live with you so you can live as
never before.
*When you accept Him as the One in charge…when you respond to Him with
the whole man, the work of redemption is done! The Miracle Occurs: is He
your Lord?
Have you enthroned Him and acknowledged Him as the One who is in
charge of all things?
C.Salvation Is Chronological 10
Here is the order of salvation:
1.Commitment For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness.
*Rest: With the heart man believes.
*Result: Believes unto righteousness. This is the only standing acceptable in God’s presence.
2.Confession With the mouth confession is made to salvation.
*Confession is agreement, in according. The person who confesses Jesus as Lord agrees with God about His Son.
*Agreement mixed with mixed with genuine Resting your full weight on Jesus Christ
brings salvation. True faith leads to confession…you can’t keep quiet!
Are you saved?
Have you surrendered the controls of your life to Another?
