We all want to make wise decisions.
A good question to ask is “What’s the wise thing to do?”
Wise vs. foolish can be easy to spot.
● Should I go 80 in a school zone?
● Should I bet my paycheque on the game?
Problems get more complex, and we still need to be able to answer the same question. What’s the wise thing to do….
● Parenting
● Future
● Free time
● Life's biggest questions. Why am I here? Is there a God?
What do we do when we don’t know what to do? We either make a decision and go with what we feel is best- or the choice is made for us by our inaction.
James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
● This might be your answer!
If it’s not? What do you do now?
● Likely, you will draw from the well of knowledge, thoughts, and ideas that you already have.
● But are they good ideas?
Where do our ideas come from? I’d say a lot of them come from social media… it used to be a bit more “social” but now it’s more of a video-based experience.
The average person spends 6hr 38 minutes on an internet-connected screen. 2.5 hrs scrolling through social media.
● Do you think that might be impacting you?
● Your screen time might be a lot less…but it might be a lot more.
What or who is influencing your life?
● Social media is full of “influencers”. It’s literally their job to influence your choices.
What’s your worldview?
● You have one. Did you help create it? Or has it just passively formed?
What’s your filter?
● How do you know what information you should be onboarding into your life?
If you don’t have a filter that you intentionally created…it might look like this.
Looks good, sounds good, feels good, creates less tension in my life, and it’s what I want to hear.
God gives wisdom.
Prov 2:1-8
● He gives wisdom, but he also tells us how to obtain the wisdom he’s handing out.
● Turn your eyes and ears to what it is that he has already said.
How to build a strong filter:
● Know what the bible says. It doesn’t have every answer to every situation but it does have a lot of guiding ideas and principles.
● Ask thoughtful questions: Is this true?, What’s the goal here? Does this idea pull me away from or towards God?
● Check the focus: Is this self or others-focused?
Make this the summer of filter building. Be careful what you onboard into your life as a good idea because it might be the very thing that you end up using next time you need to make an important choice.
