Success [in our society] does not depend on what happens at the White House, but what happens at your house.
JEN WILKIN
The home is the lab where children learn submission to authority. Christian parents train their children to submit to them so that their children will more readily learn to submit to other earthly
authorities, and ultimately, to the highest authority, our Heavenly Father. A Christian parent trains his/her child to submit to his/her visible and temporary authority so that his/her child might one day submit to God’s invisible and eternal authority.

JEN WILKIN
This life is a lab in which God’s children learn to submit to heavenly authority by submitting to earthly authority. Honoring our visible mother and father in this life is a way of storing up treasure in Heaven. By bowing to their time-tested wisdom, we prepare our hearts to bow to the timeless wisdom of God. By submitting to their visible authority, we are trained to submit our wills to the invisible authority of God. We learn by repetition, and our repeated interactions with “all superiors in ages and gifts” train us for the day when at last we enter fully into the land the Lord has given us.
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

- Depending on what season of life you are in, do you feel “honoring” your father and mother requires you to obey them, respect them, or care for them? How are you doing that?

- How might honoring your parents require you to recognize your own imperfections and need for grace as you show them grace in their parenting?

- What is 1 way you can express a word of appreciation or encouragement to your parent (or someone who has been like a parent) this week? What character trait of theirs reminds you
most of God’s character?

- What shortcomings make you feel inadequate or unworthy of honor as a parent (or parent figure in someone’s life)? What Godly wisdom and example can you offer to others?
JEN WILKIN
Honor is an expression of rightly ordered love. When we love as we should, we honor the object of our love as we should. Honored fueled by love lies at the heart of the fifth word as it does as the heart of all ten.

__________ the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like
it: __________ your neighbor as yourself.
