City of Man (Genesis 11:1-9)

City of Man (Genesis 11:1-9)

Sunday, June 29, 2025 - Message #17 by Pastor Joe Rock--"In The Beginning" (Genesis 1-11)

Locations & Times

1000 S Main St, Alta, IA 51002, USA

Sunday 8:30 AM

Sunday 10:00 AM

Babel illustrates that building our lives apart from God is pointless because of these certain realities:

1. Humanity's Pride (v 1-4)
2. God's Power (v 5-8)
3. God's Providence (v 9)
Sermon Discussion
Applying God’s Word through Journey Groups, family devotions, or personal meditation:

Opener
1. Do you know a second language? How easily do you catch on to different languages or cultures?

Recap
2. Read Genesis 11:1-9. What stood out to you from the sermon? Was there a verse or point that especially caught your attention or raised new questions?

3. What are common idols for you? How can we know when something in our life has become an idol?

4. God accomplished His will despite humanity’s rebellion against Him. This displays His sovereign power in working out His plan in human history. How does the biblical teaching of divine sovereignty encourage you? Does it raise any questions or tensions for you? (Consider Isaiah 46:9-10 or Ephesians 1:11-12)

5. How have you seen God’s “upside-down reality” at work in your life (life from death, strength in weakness, significance through humility, etc)?

Digging Deeper—Read Acts 2:1-12.
6. What similarities do you see between the Babel story and Pentecost?

7. What differences do you see between the Babel story and Pentecost?

8. How does this give us a clearer view of God’s purpose for scattering the people in Genesis 10-11?

Application
9. While pursuing holiness in ourselves and in others, how can we move past merely fixing behavior to true heart change?

10. How has God spoke to you through His Word in your personal Bible reading recently?
