Big Idea: The heart of the matter is that God is faithful, and He calls us to a life of complete trust in Him and an obedience to His Word.
I. The Heart of the Matter: Faith and Obedience (vv. 1-17)
A. David, secure in his reign as king, foolishly decides to take a
census of the fighting men of Israel. The sin wasn’t the census,
per se, but the motives of David’s heart. Why did David do this?
He acted out of pride and a trust more in the armies of Israel
than in God Almighty.
B. Did God incite David to the census, or did Satan (cf. 1 Chr.
21:1)? The answer is both. God allowed Satan to tempt David to
uncover the pride in his heart. God does not tempt us (cf. Js.
1:13), but he will allow various circumstances in our lives to
reveal sinful attitudes and behaviors that need to change, and to
give clarity as to where we can mature in our faith.
C. The heart of the matter is that David reminds us:
1. The importance of listening to wise counsel (vv. 3-4).
2. The importance of listening to our conscience (v. 10).
3. The importance of consequences (vv. 15-16).
4. The importance of humility (v. 17).
II. The Heart of the Matter: Worship (vv. 18-25)
A. David knows he has sinned, and he repents, casting himself on
the Lord’s mercy (vv. 10, 14, 17). God relents and instructs
David to build an altar for sacrifices (v. 18). David’s response to
God’s corrections is a reminder to seek God’s glory and not our
own, and to respond to God’s mercy and grace with worship.
B. In David’s offering, he teaches us an important principle of
sacrificial giving: Where is our heart in our giving (v. 24)?
1. God calls us to give sacrificially (cf. 2 Cor. 9:6-8).
2. God calls us to give willingly and joyfully.
3. Our giving recognizes God’s generous heart toward us.
C. It’s important to note that this land David bought was Mt.
Moriah, the spot where Abraham offered Issac and where
Soloman would later build the Temple, Israel’s holiest site.
