1. The TRUE Tradition: When Rite Is RIGHT
A. When we use the word RITE, we’re speaking of rituals, traditions or customs. Of course, not all tradition is bad.
B. Whenever our tradition can tell us who GOD is and who WE are, that is a good tradition.
Two Rites or SACRAMENTS of the Church
1) WATER BAPTISM
1) WATER BAPTISM
2) The LORD’S TABLE
2. The TRAGEDY of Tradition: When Rite Is WRONG
A. Jesus CONDEMNED traditions when they became more important than the things they represented.
B. Jesus REJECTED man-made traditions that lost their meaning.
C. Our WORSHIP could be vain and dead if we exalt tradition to the status of our spiritual condition.
D. Jesus was more concerned with their HEART condition than their HAND washing condition. Why? Because the heart of Christianity is the heart.
3. The TEST of Tradition: When Rite Is PROPER
A. Jesus is after a transformation of the INNER man. He cares more about who we are INSIDE than who we appear to be on the OUTSIDE.
B. We might say that the ULTIMATE test of tradition is, "Does it deal with our heart TROUBLE?"
C. When traditions remind us of who God is and who we are and ASSISTS us in knowing and connecting with Him, they’re a GOOD thing.
D. We must never ALLOW anything God DOES to become a God in our lives.
Weekly Review Read through Mark 7:1-14 and consider this question: “What Rite do you need to hold onto and/or change?”
