The Shepherd King - The King and the Cave (1 Samuel 18-22; Psalm 142; Psalm 57)
Everything seems to be going well for our young hero, David, but his success eventually causes King Saul to keep a jealous eye on him. Through a series of events, it becomes clear Saul’s jealousy has led him to try and kill David. As David goes on the run we see the defining period of his life when he’s hiding in caves. How does the future king handle going from the castle to the cave? Through David’s example in this period of his life we see how God uses the desert to redirect David — how God forges a king in the cave.

God forges kings in caves.
1. Get honest.
You cannot have intimacy without honesty.
You were meant to give voice to your pain.
When you process with God,
you invite God into the process.

2. Get perspective.
Hardship often reveals idols.
The story isn’t about your struggle.
It’s about His power to rescue.
It’s about His power to rescue.
The Sauls of the world don’t run your story.

3. Get moving.
God is carving into David the character he will need to be king.
Sometimes the wilderness is God's way to redirect. Sometimes the cave is where He forges kings. You don't have to love the darkness, but you can love the King who leads you through it.
