JEN WILKIN
10 Words to Live By
Our patterns of work and rest reveal what we believe to be true about God and ourselves. To rest is to acknowledge that we humans are limited by design. We are created for rest just as
surely as we are created for labor. An inability or unwillingness to cease from our labors is a confession of unbelief, and admission that we view ourselves as creator and sustainer of our own universe. This wrong thinking renders us not free, but enslaved to our ambition and enslaving to those we employ to achieve it.
sabbath/shabat
to cease activity for the purpose of recognizing God’s character (worship), remembering God’s provisions (reflection), trusting His grace (submission).
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” Mark 2:27
JEN WILKIN
Our natural inclination is to believe that we are keeping the world rotating on its axis, a mindset that feed as ceaseless work ethic. Sabbath presses on that mindset. It is not merely rest that
restores, but rest that reorients. It reminds us that we are not God.
JEN WILKIN
Neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns…

We remember the letter of the law of the Sabbath command by resting from labor. We remember the heart of the Sabbath command by laboring for the rest of others.
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER…
1. How do you feel challenged personally to live according to the sabbath principle?

2. Do you trust God to provide more than you trust your own ability?

3. Other than yourself, who is most impacted by your refusal to stop working and rest?

4. How could you change your typical pattern of work/rest to better align with one that involves worship, reflection, and submission?
