"Othering” refers to the way in which some individuals and groups are defined as not fitting within a certain group or community
Why do we do this?
First, people use othering to make sense of the world.
Second, people use othering as a means to enhance their own social position.
Third, people are motivated to engage in “othering” because they see it, erroneously, as a path to find their own belonging.

Third, people are motivated to engage in “othering” because they see it, erroneously, as a path to find their own belonging.
In both texts, first Jesus, then His church reaches “across the divide” to the “other” as a response to encountering the “unclean.”
BIG IDEA:
A Jesus Church will reach the “other” for the sake of Jesus’ mission
