We have a tendency as men when we think of our own fathers to have three streams of thought.

The Shadow, the Cloud, and the Mirror

1. Shadow:
We feel like we are living in the shadow of our father.

2. Cloud:
We feel like we are running from the darkness that our father put over us.

3. Mirror:
“Some see their father every time they look at themselves—and feel powerless to change.”

“We are not destined to repeat our past, we are called to redeem it.
If you want to find real life, you need to live real different.

1. We Worship Different (Romans 12:1-2)
2. We Serve Different (Romans 12:3-8)
3. We Love Different (vv. 9–16)
Genuine love isn’t just a feeling. Love acts

For men Love is shown through action & sacrifice

“A father’s love is measured not by words, but by the quiet sacrifices he makes, that often go unnoticed."

“A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” — Billy Graham
Love acts

Romans 12:11-12 (ESV)
11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
-Serve the Lord.
-Rejoice in hope.
-Be patient in pain.
-Be constant in prayer.

Romans 12:13 (ESV)
13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
-Contribute to needs.

Romans 12:14 (ESV)

Romans 12:15 (ESV)
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

Romans 12:16 (ESV)
16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.
-Be humble.
-Don’t be a know-it-all.
4. We Respond Different (vv. 17–21)

We are not called to react like the world. We are called to respond like Christ.

Romans 12:17 (ESV)
17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.

"To return evil for good is devilish. To return good for good is human. To return good for evil is divine."

Romans 12:18 (ESV)
18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
-You can’t control others, but you can control you.
How do you respond differently?

By living a life consumed by radical grace.
Leave it to God

-Don’t try to play God. (Don’t repay evil for evil)
-Leave room for God’s justice. Trust Him to deal with injustices.

Love your enemies: A Model of Action & Sacrifice

Romans 12:20-21 (ESV)
20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

This isn’t weakness—it’s divine strength.
