Deacons -
I. Their Character - 1 Timothy 3:8-10

A. Well respected - men of dignity – v. 8a

B. Integrity - honest and dependable - v. 8b

C. Not a heavy drinker - Ephesians 5:18, Romans 14:21

D. Not dishonest with money - deacons in the early church often handled the money, just as in our church today, they should not desire to use their office for their own gain - Proverbs 11:1-5

E. Doctrinally sound; mystery - v. 9,James 2:19-20

F. Tested & proven - first a servant and then a ruler - Matthew 25:20-21

II. Their Homes - 1 Timothy 3:11-12

A. Their wives – v. 11
1. Respected - the same as with men
2. Not slanderous - not malicious gossips
3. Self-controlled - Proverbs 16:32, Galatians 5:22-23
4. Faithful - absolutely trustworthy in all things; money, information, etc.

B. Their homes - v. 12, 1 Timothy 3:4-5 as with the pastor, the ability to rule ones home relates to the ability to rule in the church

III. Their Reward - 1 Timothy 3:13

A. Respected - v. 13a, James 4:10, 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

B. Boldness in faith - v. 13b, Acts 4:13
