A Psalm The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,the world, and all who live in it;2 for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters. 3 Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god. They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God their Savior. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, God of Jacob. 7 Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.10 Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty—he is the King of glory.
Psalm 24 was likely written for a very specific event:
when King David brought the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem.
when King David brought the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem.
1 Chronicles 15:25-29 NIV So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. 26 Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, seven bulls and seven rams were sacrificed. 27 Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the musicians, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod. 28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts, with the sounding of rams’ horns and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps. 29 As the ark of the covenant of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart.
2 Samuel 6:20-23 NIV When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!” 21 David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.” 23 And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.
The very essence of worship begins with the humbling of self, and the exaltation of the King of Glory!
1. God is Sovereignly in Charge (Psalm 24:1–2)
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it…”
David begins the psalm not by focusing on himself,
but on the greatness of God with the response of HUMILITY.
Worship is not about us—it’s a return to RIGHTFUL AUTHORITY.

2. Who May Enter? (Psalm 24:3–6)
“Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in His holy place?”
Clean hands = righteous actions
Pure heart = righteous motives
No idols or false oaths = no divided loyalty
John 4:23-24 NIV Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
Psalm 24 doesn’t call for perfection—but for an honest pursuit.

3. Lift Up the Gates (Psalm 24:7–10)
“Lift up your heads, you gates… that the King of glory may come in.”
Revelation 3:20 NIV “Behold, I stand at the door and knock…”
What will we do with this King?
“If Jesus were born 1,000 times in Bethlehem and not in me, it would still be for nothing.” - Corrie ten Boom
