Galatians: Living by the Spirit - Grace to Growth - Carlo Casaleggio
It brings joy to witness someone beginning a new relationship with God by receiving His grace through faith. Remember the moment you understood the gospel—that Jesus died for your sins and rose again, offering salvation as a free gift of grace. The freedom of knowing our sins are forgiven is unparalleled. The Apostle Paul emphasised this truth to the Galatians, stating in Galatians 5:1, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free." Through faith in Jesus, we are freed from sin. Once we receive grace, the question arises: How do we live now? Some Galatians thought they needed to revert to the Old Testament law to please God, while others might have felt that being saved by grace meant they could do anything. Paul addresses this concern, affirming that we shouldn't live under the law or according to our flesh, as the gospel transforms our lives.

Sunday 9:30 AM
- Paul's letter to the Galatians emphasises that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
- Paul reminds them that our new life begins with simply trusting Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9)
- Our relationship with God is built on accepting this gift by faith.
- Paul strongly warns against reverting to the law - the "yoke of slavery."
- Christians who return to legalism trade their freedom for strict rules, thinking it will make them more acceptable to God.
- Paul emphasises (Galatians 5:6) that what truly matters is "faith expressing itself through love." Our righteousness comes from Jesus, not law-keeping.
- Paul warns (Galatians 5:13) of using our freedom to indulge the flesh.
- "The flesh" means our sinful nature – those selfish, ungodly desires that are part of our old life.
- If we live no differently than before, as if the gospel changed nothing in our behaviour, we miss out on the abundant life Jesus promised.
- Paul encourages us to “walk by the Spirit” instead of gratifying the desires of the flesh.
- Living by the Spirit means yielding to the Holy Spirit's direction through prayer and Scripture.
- As we walk by the Spirit, we produce the “fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22-23): love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
- Living by the Spirit involves daily surrender.
Receiving God's grace through faith is just the beginning. It’s how we enter His family, but we’re meant to live differently, guided by the Spirit, not by old laws or habits. If you’ve felt weary like the Galatians, trying hard to be "good enough," remember Jesus’ invitation: "Come to me, all you who are weary, and I will give you rest." Or if you've misused your freedom and fallen back into old patterns, God calls you to repent and let His Spirit lead you to a better path.
We’re not alone in this; God gives us the Holy Spirit’s power. Imagine the impact if we all walked by the Spirit in our homes, churches, and communities. It starts now, with us saying "Yes" to His guidance.
