SCRIPTURE
Be watchful. Stand firm in the faith. Act like men. Be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13

WHAT DEFINES A MAN?

Biology defines a man as having one X and one Y chromosome. The Bible defines what a man is and who a man should become.

THE MAKEUP OF A GODLY MAN

1/ Joseph was committed to one woman.

Joseph, to whom Mary was engaged. Matthew 1:19

Be more committed to her than your mom, sister, any other woman, work, and hobbies.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. Ephesians 5:25

2/ Joseph was a good and godly man.

Joseph, to whom Mary was engaged, was a righteous man. Matthew 1:20

A good man will walk through a crisis. A good and godly man will pray through a crisis.

3/ Joseph was honorable and humble.

Joseph, to whom Mary was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. Matthew 1:19

We honor people, not because they are honorable, but because we are honorable.

Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought. Romans 12:3

Honorability and humility are choices. But also, a work of the Holy Spirit from within.

4/ Joseph was spiritually in tune.

As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded. Matthew 1:24

5/ Joseph was sexually harnessed.

But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. Matthew 1:25

When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 1 Corinthians 13:11

Watching porn is childish.

Making bedroom demands is childish.

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure. Hebrews 13:4

“Manhood is the defeat of childhood narcissism.” David Gilmore

Flirting with others is childish.

6/ Joseph was a good citizen.

At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea. Luke 2:1, 4

7/ Joseph was present with his family.

The shepherds hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. Luke 2:16

8/ Joseph was open to the voice of others.

Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about Jesus. Luke 2:33

Men need spiritual fathers.

Men need spiritual brothers.

Bad company corrupts good character. 1 Corinthians 15:33

Men need spiritual sons.

9/ Joseph was a man of decisive leadership.

That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary. Matthew 2:14

Impulsive leadership is emotional. Decisive leadership is calculated, prayerful, and fully committed.

10/ Joseph was a provider.

“Isn’t this the carpenter’s Son?” Matthew 13:55

Bureau of Labor Statistics: 6.8 million men (25-54) are unemployed and not looking.

Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 1 Timothy 5:8

11/ Jesus was a protector.

But when Joseph learned that the new ruler of Judea was Herod’s son Archelaus, he was afraid to go there. Then, after being warned in a dream, he left for the region of Galilee.
Matthew 2:22

Over protecting children will have a negative impact.

Under protecting children will have a negative impact.

12/ Joseph was faithful to take his family to God’s House.

Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover festival. Luke 2:41

Those who are planted in the house of the Lord will flourish! Psalm 92:13
