Dig Deeper:
1. Do you like to use GPS during road trips? Why or why not?
2. Have you ever been lost and had to ask someone for directions? Describe the experience.
3. In Acts 1-12, the church grew from eleven disciples to thousands coming to faith in Jesus. What did the disciples experience during this time? Why?
4. What excites you most about hearing about, or witnessing, a healthy church that is growing? Why?
5. Read Acts 13:1-3. Why did they fast, pray, and lay hands on Barnabus and Paul before they sent them off? What does it mean to “lay hands” on someone?
6. Read Acts 13:13-15. Look up a first century map to see the locations of the places where Paul had been and was going to. What observations do you find when doing so?
7. Why does Paul go to the synagogue on the Sabbath day? What is the “reading of the Law and the Prophets”?
8. Describe a time when something felt like a distraction but was actually an opportunity to share or show the love of Jesus with someone else. What was the outcome of the situation?
9. What might distract us from the opportunities to share about Jesus that God puts on our path?
10. What could Paul have talked about instead? Why didn’t he?
11. Read Acts 13:16-20. Who is Paul’s audience? What might they know of Paul already? Why might they listen to Paul differently than someone else?
12. Is Paul telling them something new? Why is he sharing this information?
13. Read Acts 13:21-22. Why does Paul choose to mention both Saul and David?
14. Read Acts 13:23-24. Why does Paul choose to mention John the Baptist?
15. Who did John proclaim a baptism of repentance to? What does this mean?
16. Read Acts 13:25. How are John and Paul similar? How are they different?
17. Read Acts 13:26-27. Rephrase what Paul is saying in the passage.
18. Read Acts 13:28-29. What language is Paul using here? Why?
19. Read Acts 13:30. Who had the power to raise Jesus from the dead? Describe a situation in your own life where you have been able to say, “But God…”
20. Read Acts 13:31-33. What is Paul reiterating here? Why would he refer to Psalm 2 here?
21. Read Acts 13:38-39. What does the word justified mean? How might Paul’s audience respond to this?
22. Discuss how the Ten Commandments are a compass to direct our lives. How are they like a mirror in revealing the truth about us? How can The Law not rescue and save us?
23. How do the Ten Commandments point us to Jesus?
24. Read Acts 13:42-43. How did Paul’s audience respond to what he shared?
25. What is the grace of God? Describe how you’ve seen God’s grace in your life.
Live It Out:
We are invited to respond with faith in Christ for the forgiveness of our sins. On this Father’s Day, we are reminded that the greatest mission was God the Father, sending His perfect Son Jesus down from heaven to bring salvation to us. To bring us back into a right relationship with the Father.
Are you living your life to point people to Jesus? God has called each of His children to go – across the street, in our workplaces, in our city, and in our own families, to point people to Christ. What is your next step that you can take this week to point others to Jesus?
Men, are you living to point your family to Jesus? Like John the Baptist, we point others to the wonderful grace of God in Jesus Christ. A Christlike legacy is not about just what you leave for your children, but what you leave in them. What is one change you can make this week to prioritize pointing your family to Jesus?
Maybe today, you need to come to Christ. The question “Where am I and where am I going?” is an important question spiritually. The Father’s mission is salvation through Jesus Christ. God’s law shows us that we are lost in our sin and our eternity apart from Christ. The way to find real life isn’t on a map – but through the cross. The first step is to admit that you need a Savior, repent of your sin and believe in Jesus Christ. If you are ready to take that step, pray: Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for my sin. Thank you for conquering death. I believe that you lived, died, and rose again. I surrender my life to follow You. In Jesus name I pray, amen.”
