SERMON NOTES
Luke 7:36-50
“Can God really forgive that?”
It’s one thing to believe in God. It’s another thing to believe that He could love you.
It’s one thing to believe Jesus died for sin. It’s another thing to believe He died for your sin.
Luke 7:36-39
Two very different people standing in the same room with Jesus:
· One hides his sins behind a religious mask.
· The other brings her sins out into the open.
Luke 7:40-48
Forgiveness isn’t free. Someone absorbs the cost.
charizomai (Greek) = cancelling of a debt
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving (charizomai) one another, as God in Christ forgave you. – Ephesians 4:32
…bearing with one another and forgiving (charizomai) each other, just as the Lord forgave you… - Colossians 3:13
Forgiven people forgive people.
aphiemi (Greek) = to send away or release
Forgive (aphiemi) our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors…If you forgive others…your heavenly Father will also forgive you. – Matthew 6:12, 15
Friend, your sins are forgiven (aphiemi). – Luke 5:20
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive (aphiemi) us… - 1 John 1:9
Could it be that we’ve forgotten just how much we’ve been forgiven?
Romans 8:1-2
Matthew 12:31-32
What the “unforgivable sin” is NOT:
· Not a moment of weakness.
· Not cussing out of frustration.
· Not doubting, struggling, or even falling into sin.
The “unforgivable sin” IS a willful, hardened, ongoing rejection of the Spirit’s testimony about Jesus—refusing to repent, refusing to believe, calling light darkness and truth a lie.
1 John 1:9
If you are in Christ, then there is no condemnation for you.
· Not from God.
· Not from your past.
· Not even from yourself.
Romans 8:3-4
Forgiveness isn’t something you feel your way into. Forgiveness is something God declared over you because of what Jesus did for you.
“If we confess, He is faithful…”
nasa (Hebrew) = to lift up or carry away
Psalm 103:12
Luke 7:50
Forgiveness doesn’t just change your status—it changes your life.
Living Like You’re Forgiven:
· Forgiven people hate sin.
· Forgiven people love Jesus deeply
· Forgiven people live humbly
· Forgiven people pursue holiness
· Forgiven people forgive others
We don’t forgive to excuse evil. We forgive to be free from it.
Forgiveness says: I’m not going to carry this anymore.
Reconciliation says: We’re walking together again.
Are you living like you’re forgiven?
Forgiveness isn’t a maybe. In Christ, it’s a guarantee.
