The Shepherd King week 1 - Chosen and Broken (1 Samuel 16)
This summer we’re launching into a sermon series around the life of David - the shepherd king. We start by leaning into the kind of heart the Lord seeks to be active with and how we can align our hearts to be useful. David was chosen, but broken - and we to can be used by God in much the same ways. Guard your heart, friends. May your heart stay rightly positioned so God’s activity is leveraged through your life.

https://share.fluro.io/form/6329f633da0feb00250cbd5fTonight we begin our summer series investigating the life and reign of King David. A King that is both: Chosen and broken… we’ll see his life and learn some important lessons from it - character that God longs to carve within us. How God can redeem even the broken places and choices of ours - as he did for David.
David is one of the most documented figures in the ancient world. Influenced a lot of art throughout the world.
David is the Shepherd King, the Warrior Poet, the Military Musician.
Certainly the most iconic king in Jewish history and much of history.

God sets about choosing the king - putting His plans into action - He is sovereignly guiding His people and always active behind the scenes for their good. The same is true for us in our day!
Be careful what you look at for evaluation - outward signs and appearances aren't always what they seem.
Look deeper, like God does.
Look deeper, like God does.
7 sons get paraded before Samuel and God doesn’t pick any of ‘em and then Samuel has to awkwardly ask: is this all your sons??
— David is an after-thought...to man - but first on the list to God.

David is CHOSEN (even though he is still broken)
Far from perfect - but his heart is rightly positioned and able to be used by God…
The heart matters!!!
“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life”
-Proverbs 4:23

Dallas Willard says:
“Our life and how we find the world now and in the future is, almost totally, a simple result of what we have become in the depths of our being…. From there we see our world and interpret reality. From there we make our choices, break forth into action…
We live from our depths…. We live from our heart.”

God desires most - a heart that has been transformed…one that is moldable and able to be shaped by Him.

God rejected Saul because of his heart, but he chose David because of his heart.
As we look at their hearts —we should ask ourselves: What is my default?
Ask yourself what your default is. Is your heart right with God?
